The Fayetteville-Manlius Central School District ranked the highest of any district in the Syracuse area on the latest round of statewide assessment tests in English language arts and math.
The district ranked 20th in the state in math with 85% of its students testing proficient and tied for No. 26 in ELA with 73% proficient.
Most of the top schools in the state were located in Downstate New York, mainly on Long Island or in Westchester County.
The state Department of Education released the latest math and ELA assessment scores for students in grades three through eight earlier in November. The new batch of scores is from the 2023-2024 school year.
Syracuse.com analyzed the data and ranked every district using the combined scores on math and ELA tests for all grades.
Statewide, the Quogue Union Free School District in Suffolk County on Long Island was No. 1 for both math and ELA. A total of 98% of the district’s students tested proficient in math and 95% were proficient in ELA.
Students are considered proficient if they score at level three or higher on the assessment tests.
The Syracuse City School District had some of the worst proficiency scores in all of New York last year, according to the state data.
Just 20% of the district’s students tested proficient in ELA, tying the district for 644th statewide out of 658 districts for which the Education Department had data. In math, 18% of city students were proficient on last year’s assessments, which ranked Syracuse 549 out of 551.
The high rankings for suburban schools are not a surprise. Those districts tend to enjoy advantages that urban schools don’t, including more money and newer buildings and equipment.
Many students in urban districts like Syracuse live in poverty or have difficult home lives. Those factors bring additional challenges to learning during the school day and ultimately show up in measures of achievement like test scores and graduation rates.
Statewide assessment testing has been controversial at times. Parents and teachers have long questioned how effective the scores are and whether the problems they can cause for some districts are really worth it.
